Shook-Smathers House Preservation

Thanks to the efforts of Joseph Shook Hall, PhD, Mathews Architecture, and many others, the Shook-Smathers House was fully restored in 2004 after falling into significant disrepair: Shook-Smathers House Museum | Mathews Architecture

HCHGS is currently planning for rehabilitation of various features of the Shook-Smathers House. A grant was received from Partners for Sacred Places to fund a portion of planning project. The planning project would identify areas of concern and provide recommendations to allow HCHGS to pursue funding for capital projects in the near future. There are many ways to help us with our goals on this project including donating for an engraved brick from The Museum of Haywood County History Brick Donor Site

The Shook-Smathers House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places: Shook-Welch-Smathers House
